Annette Remington is a strong, knowledgeable woman. A private art consultant, she has been approached by Christopher Delaware, who has inherited his uncle's art collection. Annette found a Rembrandt in the collection and promoted it at a London auction where it brought in twenty million pounds. This sale brought recognition to Annette in the art world, making her a rising star.

Annette is married to her mentor, the handsome and wealthy Marius Remmington, twenty years her senior. Annette was poor and abused growing up, and after meeting Marius, she confided a secret from her past to him. She has always lived in fear that her true identity might be exposed. Marius is a jealous, controlling husband, and we learn he is also a cheat and a manipulator. He believes Annette should have a feature article done on herself for the local paper to promote her business, so he sets out to hire a journalist capable of discretion.

Christopher Delaware's home in Kent, England holds secrets from his past also. The house has hidden rooms full of priceless art by famous artists such as Cezanne, Degas, Manet, and Pissarrio. On closer inspection of the collection, Annette is certain that many are forgeries. If the media found this out Annette's career could be ruined. She now has to begin an investigation into the art and find out who is responsible and why?

When Annette meets Jack Chalmers, the journalist Marius hired to write her story, she is immediately attracted to him, and knows he feels the same for her. Loyal to Marius for teaching her everything she knows about art, she tries to keep the relationship strictly professional. When Jack begins his research for the article he has no idea that the extent of the information he finds could not only destroy Marius, but also link his past with Annette's. Playing The Game draws us into a world of wealth, glamour, and glitz with many surprises.
