The Immortals: A Taylor Jackson Novel    by J. T. Ellison Order:  USA  Can Mira, 2010 (2010) Paperback, CD, e-Book Read an Excerpt     Reviewed by Martina Bexte Taylor Jackson barely has time to bask in her reinstatement as head of the Nashville PD murder squad when she is called in to investigate a series of grotesque and unsettling killings, the likes of which she and her team have never seen before. On the night of Blood Harvest - more commonly known as Halloween - eight teenagers are found murdered in their homes, with pentagrams and other strange symbols carved into their naked bodies. Taylor and her team are shocked and outraged by the grisly multiple homicides. Her commander and a terrified public demand immediate answers and swift justice. Unfortunately, Taylor's fiancée, FBI profiler John Baldwin, is unable to assist. He's called back to Washington to answer charges of misconduct after certain irregularities are discovered in a previous case. While Baldwin fights to save his career, Taylor and her team race against the clock to uncover answers. This eventually lead them to mysticism, witchcraft and the underground Goth culture. While Ellison handily juggles two storylines, the secondary one involving Baldwin left me (a first time Ellison reader) occasionally confused over references to the series' past cases and villains, which ultimately slowed down the story for me. On the other hand, the main storyline (surrounding the teen murders) is dark and gripping with an unsettling touch of the mystic, and isn't bogged down by too much procedural detail. Ellison also provides appealing and well rounded characterizations in Taylor and her team members, and ultimately ties things up with an explosive ending - all the necessary ingredients to make The Immortals a chilling, page-turning thriller.
