armen, Sam Purdy's girlfriend, is pregnant with his child. She's been ordered complete bed rest, which leaves it to Sam to stand in for her at the announcement of her daughter Dulce's wedding. Sam flies to Miami to attend. The suspended Boulder detective feels out of place on a private yacht, but for Carmen he is willing to handle whatever is thrown his way.

is stay in Miami is short. His hostess receives a message telling her that her daughter is in danger, to wait for instructions, and tell no one. When her daughter goes missing, Ann Calderon risks enlisting Sam's help. Sam never imagined that he'd become entangled in a multiple hostage situation at Yale, involving secret societies with students used as bartering chips.
T
he Siege
is Sam Purdy's story, although not his story alone. Two new players are introduced: Christopher Poe, an FBI counterterrorist special agent who works alone; and Deidre Drake, the CIA analyst who is his lover. Poe, a Kansas City bomb survivor, watches the first Yale hostage execution on live television and is sure that he is watching an act of terrorism. He is drawn to New Haven. Worried about him, Deidre follows.
W
orking outside the official government agencies in charge, Sam, Poe, and Deidre compile information and work against time to find the reasons behind the
siege
. Nail-bitingly suspenseful, the tension grows page by page. This is one of White's best.
