W
hether in fiction or non-fiction, Peter Mayle brings fine food, magnificent wine and a sense of adventure to his readers.
The Vintage Caper
is no exception.
L
awyer Danny Roth suffers a great loss – to his looted wine cellar as well as to his large ego. How could anyone do this to him? Sam Levitt, former lawyer and a wine connoisseur, is implored to find Danny's wine. Irreplaceable wine! Worth over two million dollars!
T
racing the crime leads Sam to France - to Bordeaux and Provence. Along the way, Sam is able to indulge himself in foods and wines that have the reader salivating. At least this one did. Bouillabaisse. Escargots. The finest of Champagnes. Even tripe! And that list is only the tip of the iceberg.
S
am solves the crime, which is ingenious, by the way. As are his following actions.
M
ayle has a love of France that is apparent in his writing. And the humor to enjoy it. He delves into what is essential in the French character. And lays that essence out with great care for readers to savor. As always, Mayle's work is very welcome in my home.
