Garrett, the McKettrick middle brother, is on the ladder to success as a politician. When a scandal brings him home to Blue River Texas, he meets Julie Remington, the sister of his brother Tate's fiancée. Garrett is licking his wounds after learning that the individual he grew up idolizing is not the man he thought he was. He decides to stay on at the ranch when he learns that weird things - such as cows being killed - have been happening there.

Julie has a five year old son, Calvin, who has severe asthma. She worries about Calvin constantly. Now his father, Gordon, who wanted nothing to do with Calvin when he was born, comes into his life. Julie has mixed feelings about this, but does not want to confuse her son. And having the handsome Garrett around is turning her life into turmoil.

Calvin loves Garrett and can't seem to hang around him enough. Though Julie and Garrett butt heads over a few issues, like Calvin riding the horses, they both want what is best for the boy. Garrett's patience and gentleness with Calvin increases Julie's attraction to him. Garrett seems to forget his political troubles when he is with Julie and on the ranch - he could really think about living this life again.

This second book in the McKettricks of Texas series is just as good as the first. Julie and Garrett's journey to love is enjoyable, and the cattle rustling suspense keeps readers turning the pages until the very end. Set aside a nice day to sit on the porch swing for a great afternoon of reading.
