veryone knows Louisa May Alcott wrote
Little Women
. But how about some of her other stories and poems? Volume Eighteen of
Graphic Classics
presents six of Alcott's stories and two poems in graphic novel form.
T
he main story is indeed
Little Women
, but some of Alcott's darker, more gothic, works are also included:
The Rival Prima Donnas
,
Lost in a Pyramid
, and
A Whisper in the Dark
. These three stories show that Alcott could craft tales for adults as well as young adults. Her two other stories presented here,
Buzz
and
The Piggy Girl
, are both unique in their own right.
Buzz
is a sad story about a fly, with an uplifting ending, while
The Piggy Girl
is more of a fable for children. The two poems in this collection,
To the First Robin
and
The Lay of the Golden Goose
, show that Alcott's poetry can be just as much fun as her fiction.
E
ach piece in
Graphic Classics Vol. 18: Louisa May Alcott
is illustrated by a different artist, so each has a unique feel to it. For instance, when I was younger, I never wanted to read
Little Women
, but having it here in graphic novel format, I easily delved into what proved to be a delightful story. I think a lot of this stems from the rich, comic-like artwork that helps keep the story moving.
A
Whisper in the Dark
is the other piece that has a contemporary comic feel to it while the rest of the stories have a more
arty
look to them.
The Lay of the Golden Goose
is presented in almost picture-book form and
To the First Robin
is just one gorgeous illustration. All of these different looks accompany their respective pieces well, setting each work apart from the rest and making the whole book a fun read.
