F
ans of Natsuki Takaya (creator of
Fruits Basket
and
Tsubasa: Those with Wings
) will delight in
Songs to Make You Smile
. This collection of five short manga shows how Takaya's style has grown over time. All of the stories deal with love, but that, and Takaya's characteristic style, are all that they have in common.
O
f the five stories, two really stood out to me.
Voice of Mine
is a moody tale about a music student who is the son of famous parents; therefore his schoolmates believe that his talent is not really his own. The pacing of this one, with sparse panels and no unnecessary dialogue, adds to the feelings of isolation.
T
he other piece that really stood out was
Tsubasa: Those with Wings Bonus Fun Chapter: Princess Dark Black
. As the name implies, this was truly a fun read. Princess Dark Black is actually Snow White with a major attitude problem. Takaya does incorporate the whole fairy tale, but in a twisty and funky manner that makes this a hilarious read.
I
f you enjoy Natsuki Takaya's work, you need to get
Songs to Make You Smile
to complete your collection. All of the stories will indeed leave you with a smile.
