Sara Booth Delaney and Tinkie Richmond are back in Zinnia, Mississippi where Tinkie's husband Oscar has succumbed to a plague-like illness that has even the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention stumped. Tinkie is afraid to leave Oscar's bedside. Sara Booth is on her own as she searches for clues that will help diagnosis this life threatening illness. Meanwhile, the number of victims increases.

All the patients have in common is a visit to the Carlisle cotton plantation run by Agri-Team, a farming consortium. The cotton there is two feet tall while the rest of Sunflower County cotton is barely breaking ground. The Carlisle heirs are at odds about whether to sell the plantation to a land developer. Each accuses the other of prior bad acts, including murder.

How does an unproven murder at the Carlisle Plantation fit in with an unknown illness, genetically altered cotton, and mutated boil weevils? Haines' twisty plot will keep you guessing until the end. Readers will also be surprised at the changes in Sara Booth's private life.
