A book for the times, this guide will appeal to anyone who is faced with having to sell something to receive a paycheck. 'When things are tough, go back to the basics,' recommends Tom Hopkins.

He continues, 'Selling can and does continue during tough times. And the true sales professionals who understand and act on what needs to be done not only survive but thrive.' Obviously, Hopkins intends to explain what needs to be done to assure his reader can keep selling.

After defining a sales career and looking at the traits of top sales professionals, the author turns his attention to what he calls the basics of selling. He discusses how to keep the clients you currently have, how to find new clients and reduce sales resistance as well as deal with the competition. Closing the deal, belt-tightening tips, and how to cope with negativity are also issues looked at in later chapters of the book.

To get a better sense of whether this is a book that you'd like to delve into in depth, check the summaries at the end of each chapter. If you like what you find and the ideas make sense to you, this would probably be a worthwhile purchase.

Early on, Hopkins states his desire or goal is to reignite the reader's fire and determination to succeed. 'You may be currently facing challenges of one sort or another,' he writes. 'But unless your industry as a whole is disintegrating, there's hope that you'll come out on top as one of the professionals who survives and thrives whatever today's challenge might be.'

If this comment resonates with you then probably you'll be very interested in learning how to sell in tough times!
