hen she is asked to tutor Robbie Inouye she doesn't know he is Reeve's brother. He's a scary, mentally-challenged kid who took teasing and abuse from his classmates until one day he went berserk. Johanna, who just happened to be there, ended up with a dislocated shoulder. A few other students had worse injuries. Now everyone steers clear of Robbie, Johanna included.

ohanna begins to understand why Robbie is like he is when she stakes out his house hoping to catch a glimpse of Reeve. Family violence is something Johanna has only read about. Her family includes her sister and brother-in-law. She's not as close to her sister as she once was, but her sister is there for her now that their parents are dead and would never intentionally hurt her.

ohanna and Reeve begin an intense relationship. Johanna wants to save Reeve from her abusive family life. She realizes that Robbie is not the only one damaged by their parents. Reeve has scars on the outside and deeper ones inside. She can be abusive too. Johanna, sure she can save Reeve, makes excuses for her actions, but who will save Johanna?
