She's living in a foster home with people who can't understand someone like her. Her friends at Templeton House, a group home for kids who haven't been placed in foster care, are jealous of her posh placement and no longer want her to visit them. On top of that, her foster parents are arguing about her. Holly finds a blonde wig worn by Rachel, her foster mother, when she had cancer. When Holly tries on the wig she becomes a different person. Older, smarter, prettier and more confident. She even gives herself a new name. Now she is Solace. The wig gives her the courage to run away from her foster home and head for Ireland where she thinks her mother has been for the nine years Holly has been a ward of the state. Managing to keep herself safe and out of trouble, Solace travels across England. Then she stows away in a car that is waiting to board the ferry to Ireland. As she travels she has her memories of her mother to sustain her. Solace of the Road is this author's last novel. Siobhan Dowd died of cancer in 2007.
