begins at the start of Valerie Leftman's senior year at Garvin High School. Summer has been a welcome hiatus where she could hide out without seeing or talking to anyone. After leaving the school in an ambulance five months ago, she is reluctant to face the other students and her teachers.

alerie helped her boyfriend, Nick Levil put together a
Hate List
including everyone who had ever taunted, bullied or put down either of them. When Nick opens fire in the school cafeteria, Valerie is as surprised and horrified as everyone there. All she can think of is making him stop. In doing so, she is shot, a wound that almost kills her, but she saves the life of a classmate – someone on the hate list.

onths later, her classmates know she helped make up the
Hate List
, but they aren't sure whether she was a part of Nick's terrible plot or a hero for taking a bullet to stop him.
