. Good book! Joseph Wambaugh, with this latest novel, maintains his reputation as a writer of bestsellers.

is portrayal of the LAPD has the effect of dropping his readers into the station house alongside the black and whites who police Los Angeles. After reading, I'm not sure who are the most interesting and engaging characters - the arrestors or the arrested.

' Nate Weiss, a struggling actor who turned cop, and his partner Dana Vaughn hit the streets and get a call that a young man has been attacking women. Each attack is a little more violent and it is expected that it won't be long before he kills.

wo surfer cops known as Flotsam and Jetsam keep running into a smooth talking player in dreads and a crazy-eyed, tattooed biker. Could there be some connection? Readers live the lives of these suspicious men as well as taking the perspective of the police trying to catch them in wrongdoing. The plot takes lots of twists and turns, even chases as it becomes more complex. And exciting.

- high praise, indeed and well deserved.
