ormer Posadas County Sheriff Bill Gastner just can't to seem to stay out of murder cases, even though retirement has claimed him. A close friend of his dies of an apparent heart attack - but was it truly his heart? Undersheriff Estelle Reyes-Guzman enlists Gastner's aid in determining whether the death was natural. After all, the man was living on borrowed time.

eanwhile, back at the ranch - sorry, got carried away. But ranches are involved in this story of New Mexico. A cowhand is thrown from his horse and that darn horse just makes things worse by stepping on his knee with all the animal's weight. Another cowhand delivers his boss's cattle to new pasture and then promptly disappears. As does the $40,000 truck and livestock trailer he was driving.

is the sixteenth book in the Bill Gastner series. And it is as good as the last one and the one before that and the one even before that. Action moves the story along at a fast pace. The characters are, by now, good friends and we're glad to welcome them back. I wonder what happens in the next of the Bill Gastner series. Looking forward to it.
