In a series of 13 biographical sketches, Hanna tells the stories of some of the individuals who immortalized the region with their feats, their writing, and their art. He also features some of the key people who worked to preserve and protect the land for future generations. These well researched and very readable narratives feature some truly unusual and inspirational westerners. The reader will meet Hugh Monroe, a young man who left his Eastern Canada home to become the legendary Blackfoot Indian called Rising Wolf and Billy Jackson who served as General Custer's scout at the Battle of Little Bighorn. Other colorful figures include writer James Willard Schultz, artists Winold Reiss, Hart Merriam Schultz, and Charles Marion Russell and George Bird Grinnell, the Father of Glacier National Park. Filled with entertaining anecdotes about these men who shaped Glacier National Park in one way or another, Stars Over Montana is a quick read which those who have traveled to the park will find highly informative and interesting. This would also be an excellent book to read in preparation for a visit to Glacier so that you are familiar with some of the area's history.
