Sophie, the Duchess of Carlton lost her husband Garrett at the Battle of Waterloo. Devastated, she made it through with the help of Garrett's best friend and heir, Tristan. Sophie bore Garrett's child, and a few months later, Tristan's wife died leaving him with a young son. When Garrett was declared dead seven years after the battle, Tristan and Sophie married.

After eight years of amnesia, Garrett finally returns home to Sophie, only to find her in bed with his best friend. He is angry but agrees to let Tristan stay in the house until the courts decide who Sophie's husband is. Garrett has loved Sophie since she was sixteen years old; he has finally returned and does not want to give her up again.

Tristan is in love with Sophie and when the courts decide that Garrett is her husband, he has to leave the house along with his son. He is torn apart especially when he hears that Garrett is going mad. He can't believe it but Garrett is different than before the war. Tristan has loved Sophie all his life and let her go once to Garrett - he does not want to let her go again.

Sophie knows she must choose one man, but she loves them both. She has loved Garrett almost all her life but Tristan has shown her a whole different passion that she is not sure she wants to give up. Garrett is very different from when they were first married. He seems almost cold but he is still getting back parts of his memory. Sophie doesn't want to hurt anyone's feelings but she has to choose.

A Hint of Wicked is a very different book, Sophie has known both men all her life and when her first husband is declared legally dead, she finds happiness again with Tristan. Jennifer Haymore creates an interesting love triangle in a masterfully written story.
