Valley of the Lost
, we return to the village of Trafalgar in British Columbia. The first in this impressive series,
In the Shadow of the Glacier
, introduced readers to Molly Smith, a Probationary Constable in Trafalgar, and to Sergeant John Winter, a policeman who felt the streets of Vancouver were wearing him down and that he needed a quieter life. Little did he realize that trials and tribulations occur wherever one chooses to go.
M
olly's mother Lucky (that's right, that's her name - a holdover from the sixties, she is still adamant in her beliefs and will confront authorities at the drop of a bandana) finds a dead body in the woods and a tiny baby near the body. The young woman is obviously dead from an overdose but there are signs of restraints on her wrists and ankles!
L
ucky keeps the baby until its family can be found, in spite of a woman from Children's Services insisting she give up the infant.
T
he plot is finely tuned and action moves at a fast clip with a climax that is worth the read. The characters are well fleshed out. Wouldn't mind knowing some of them. The village is a gem. Too bad it's a product of the author's very active imagination. I look forward to the third in this series (soon I hope).
