Sarah Booth Delaney and her dog, Sweetie Pie, leave Dalhia House, her ancestral home in Mississippi, and head for Hollywood to take a shot at stardom. Her screen test goes so well she's asked to co-star in a remake of Body Heat with Graf Miliau. Graf wants to be more than just a co-star on the big screen. He wants Sarah Booth back in his life. During her short acting career in New York, Sarah Booth was in love with Graf.

The actual filming of Body Heat will be done at the director's home in Costa Rica. Before they can leave Hollywood, a rival for Sarah's Booth's role dies in mysterious circumstances near the borrowed house where she and Graf are staying. When things start to go wrong in Costa Rica, the tabloids are quick to write that the movie is jinxed.

Sarah Booth's close friends - Tinkie, Millie, and Cece - fly in from Mississippi to give Sarah moral support when dangerous accidents continue to happen on the set. The ghost of the director's late wife is said to haunt the house. Sarah's not afraid of ghosts. She has one of her own at Dahlia House.

Jitty, Sarah's resident ghost, follows her to Costa Rica where she encourages Sarah Booth to remember that her biological clock is ticking and to accept Graf's off-stage offer. Dahlia House needs an heir.

This is the eighth in Carolyn Haines' Bones series. Sarah Booth and her friend Tinkie own a detective agency in Zinnia, Mississippi. They've solved a lot of crimes there and now - though Sarah Booth's roots will always be in the Mississippi Delta - they are taking their skills to Hollywood.
