In the seventh Reigning Cats & Dogs mystery, Monkey See, Monkey Die, veterinarian Jessica Popper waits in a diner for her old vet school friend Erin Walsh. Erin had asked to talk to Jessica but never appears. Turns out she had a good excuse. She was murdered!

Since Jessica had helped solve previous murders, Erin's sister begs her to find out who killed Erin. As Jessica is about to be married - which is harder and harder for her to accept - another murder case is not going to make her soon-to-be husband very happy. He's afraid for her to be involved once again in such a serious investigation, putting herself in jeopardy.

Erin was a zoo keeper and somehow Jessica is sure illegal trade of endangered species is involved. Author Cynthia Baxter uses her scenario to get in a few words on the trafficking of wild animals and the effects that has on the global picture. (Personally, I find it hard to go to a zoo now after seeing so many wonderful and beautiful creatures running free on the Serengeti.)

This is a fun series and just the thing to while away a few escapist hours. Regarding the question raised in the very last sentence of this clever novel, fans will have to wait for an answer from the next Reigning Cats & Dogs adventure.
