Vanessa Rothroth is a superb scrabble player, a rising spelling bee contestant and a little bit of a nerd. She crushes on the wrong boy without recognizing that someone nicer and more gentle is crushing on her. She leads a complicated life, often played out in the public eye because her mother is the governor of Florida. As if that weren't bad enough, now her mother is running for president.

Vanessa misses having her mother at school functions and at home to watch their favorite TV series, Gilmore Girls, with her. Campaigning is taking up all of her mother's time and energy. Vanessa can't help but wish she would drop out of the race. Just when she thinks things can't get any worse, someone slips threatening notes into her school locker. With her mother in danger, Vanessa believes the only way to keep her safe is to stop her campaign.

Elyssa Rothrock is a single mother whose worries about balancing her family and career reflect those of a lot of families, but she also has to worry about Vanessa's safety from those who would like her to give up her run for president. This timely, entertaining story is a quick read for youngsters from nine to thirteen.
